ABOUT

LIVE MUSIC

The Live Music division of Music Society exists for musicians with a conventional interest in band-forming, songwriting, and generally in live performance - the Live Music Leader is responsible for organising these activities and opportunities. This role is recent to Msoc, taking on the commitment of the long-standing Live Music Society which merged with Music Society at the end of the 19/20 year. With support from the rest of the Msoc committee but mainly operating independently, the Live Music Leader will traditionally create events that bring musicians together and that encourage them to perform in their own way. Open-mic nights in the student bar or jam-sessions for example have been very successful in cultivating a diverse and supportive live music community, while more serious events like Battle of the Bands introduce an element of competition, which promotes musical prowess and dedication to the arts scene. The Live Music Leader should have a basic understanding of music technology (or at least be very willing to learn) as they will be responsible for the PA system at any given gig - likewise they should be aware of the gear Live Music currently owns - if something needs replacing or if there's reason to buy something new, it's up to them to ask the Msoc treasurer for the funds. Live Music does not share equipment with the rest of Music Society, as a rule. LM leader should also be proactive, friendly, accommodating to all kinds of musicians, and above all passionate about getting people up on stage to play.
